આમિર ખાનના પ્રોડક્શનમાં બનેલી ફિલ્મ ‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’ને બૉયકૉટ કરવાની ઝુંબેશ શરૂ થઈ તે સારું થયું પણ આવી કોઈ ઝુંબેશ શરૂ ન થઈ હોત તો પણ મનોરંજનની કે ફિલ્મ મેકિંગની દ્રષ્ટિએ ‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’ એટલી નબળી છે કે આમિર ખાનની અગાઉની ફિલ્મોનાં મોંફાટ વખાણ કરનારા કેટલાક પ્રતિષ્ઠિત ફિલ્મ વિવેચકોએ પણ આ ફિલ્મનાં છોતરાં ફાડી નાખ્યાં છે.
આ ફિલ્મ જોવા માટે આમેય પ્રેક્ષકો થિયેટરમાં પગ મૂકવાના નહોતા. બૉયકૉટ ન થઈ હોત તો કદાચ પહેલા બે-ચાર-છ દિવસ પૂરતું ફિલ્મનું કલેક્શન અત્યારના કરતાં થોડુંક વધારે હોત પણ એ સિવાય બૉક્સ ઑફિસ પર સંપૂર્ણપણે ધબડકો જ પુરવાર થઈ હોત એટલી નબળી છે.
ફિલ્મો ક્યારેક સારી બને, ક્યારેક ખરાબ બને. અચ્છા અચ્છા સફળ સર્જકોએ નબળી ફિલ્મો બનાવી છે. પણ ‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’માં માત્ર નબળી ક્રિયેટિવિટીની વાત નથી. ક્રિયેટિવ લિબર્ટીના નામે થયેલી દેશ સાથેની ગદ્દારીની વાત છે.
‘ફૉરેસ્ટ ગમ્પ’ નામની એક સુંદર, સફળ અને અડધો ડઝન ઑસ્કાર એવૉર્ડ જીતનારી 1994માં આવેલી હૉલિવુડની ફિલ્મની આ ઑફિશ્યલ રિમેક છે. સત્તાવાર પરવાનગી લીધા પછી રિમેક કરતી વખતે ભારતીય સંદર્ભો ઉમેરવા માટે જે કંઈ નાનામોટા ફેરફારો કરવામાં આવે તેને તમે ક્રિયેટિવ લિબર્ટી જરૂર કહી શકો પણ ‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’માં આમિર ખાને મૂળ ફિલ્મમાંનું એક આખું ખૂબ મહત્ત્વનું પાત્ર ધરમૂળથી બદલી નાખ્યું છે—પોતાનો પાકિસ્તાન પ્રેમ પ્રદર્શિત કરીને ભારતના કેટલાક વર્ગને ખુશ કરવા.
મૂળ ફિલ્મમાં શું એ પાત્ર અમેરિકાના દુશ્મન દેશનું છે? ના. શું એ અમેરિકાની સામે લડનારું છે? ના. ઇન ફેક્ટ લેફ્ટનન્ટ ડેન ટેલરની આગલી સાત પેઢીઓએ અમેરિકા માટે પોતાના પ્રાણ પાથર્યા છે અને લેફ્ટનન્ટ ડેન પણ અમેરિકા માટે લડતાં લડતાં રણભૂમિમાં જ મોત મળે એવું સપનું સેવે છે. પણ બને છે એવું કે હીરો ટૉમ હેન્ક્સ અર્થાત્ ફોરેસ્ટ ગમ્પ પોતાના ઉપરો અફસર લેફ્ટનન્ટ ડેનના બે પગ કપાઈ જાય છે ત્યારે સાહેબને મરવા નથી દેતો પણ પોતાના જાનને જોખમે એમને બચાવીને પોતાના ખભે ઊંચકીને બંદૂકની વરસતી ગોળીઓનો અને બૉમ્બ-સુરંગોનો સામનો કરીને હૉસ્પિટલ ભેગા કરે છે.
લેફ્ટનન્ટ ડેન ફોરેસ્ટ ગમ્પ પર ગુસ્સે છે – શા માટે તેં મને બચાવ્યો, મારે વીરગતિ જોઈતી હતી, ફૅમિલીની ટ્રેડિશનને બરકરાર રાખવી હતી. પાછળથી બંને વચ્ચે દોસ્તી થાય છે અને ફોરેસ્ટ ગમ્પના ત્યાગને કારણે લેફ્ટનન્ટ ડેન કરોડો રૂપિયાના કારોબારનો માલિક બને છે— આવી એક પેટાકથા મૂળ ફિલ્મમાં છે.
‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’માં શું છે? આમિર ખાન કારગિલ યુદ્ધ વખતે ભારત વિરુદ્ધ લડતા પાકિસ્તાન આર્મીના મોહમ્મદ નામના આતંકવાદીને માનવતાની રાહે બચાવી લે છે. યુદ્ધમાં દુશ્મન પર આ રીતે માનવતા દેખાડવાનું કોઈ રાષ્ટ્રપ્રેમીને તો ન જ સૂઝે. આમ છતાં લાલ સિંહ એટલો ભલો-ભોળો છે કે એને સૂઝ્યું. ચાલો, આ એક ગુનો માફ કરીને આગળ વધીએ.
યુદ્ધમાં લાલસિંહ પણ ઘવાયો છે, હૉસ્પિટલમાં એની બાજુના ખાટલામાં બે પગ કપાયેલો મોહમ્મદ છે. હવે સવાલ એ થાય કે આને શું તમે ક્રિયેટિવ લિબર્ટીનું લાયસન્સ કહી શકો? ના. આ સરાસર બેવકૂફી છે અને દેશદ્રોહ સુધી પહોંચતી મૂર્ખામી છે. લશ્કરી હૉસ્પિટલમાં દાખલ કરતી વખતે મોહમ્મદની આઇડેન્ટિટી ચેક કરવામાં નહીં આવી હોય? શું ભારતીય લશ્કરના કર્તાહર્તાઓને આમિર ખાન પોતાના જેવા પાકિસ્તાનપ્રેમી ગણે છે કે દુશ્મન દેશના આતંકવાદીને પનાહ આપીને એની આગતાસ્વાગતા કરે? એના પર કોઈ ચોકીપહેરો ન રાખે? એની ઊલટતપાસ કરીને એને હિરાસતમાં ન રાખે? અને બે પગ ગુમાવી ચૂકેલો મોહમ્મદ રાતોરાત હૉસ્પિટલમાંથી પલાયન થઈ જાય તો એને શોધવા તપાસટુકડી ન મોકલે? એને ગાયબ કરવામાં હૉસ્પિટલમાં કોણે એની મદદ કરી (આમિર ખાને?) એની જાંચતપાસ ન કરે? અને વરસો સુધી મોહમ્મદ ભારતમાં મુક્તપણે રખડ્યા કરતો હોવા છતાં પકડાય નહીં એટલું જ નહીં વર્ષો પછી આમિર ખાન એને મળે ત્યારે મોહમ્મદને કરોડો રૂપિયાના ગંજી-ચડ્ડીના બિઝનેસથી ફાયદો કરાવી આપે છતાં ભારતીય આર્મી, પોલીસ કોઈ પણ આમિર ખાનની ધરપકડ ના કરે—પાકિસ્તાની આતંકવાદીને ફંડિંગ કરવા બદલ?
આમિર ખાન નિઃશંક એક સારો અભિનેતા છે જે મારે કહેવાની જરૂર નથી – ‘રંગીલા’ અને ‘સરફરોશ’થી માંડીને ‘લગાન’ સુધીની અનેક ફિલ્મોમાં એણે પોતાની પ્રતિભા પુરવાર કરી છે. પણ આ સફળતાનો એણે વારંવાર દુરૂપયોગ કર્યો છે. નર્મદા યોજનામાં વિઘ્નો ઊભાં કરતી મેધા પાટકરને સાથ આપીને, 2002નાં રમખાણો બદલ મોદીજીને જવાબદાર ઠેરવીને, પોતાની પત્નીને આ દેશમાં રહેવાનો ડર લાગે છે એવું બેફામ બોલતાં રહીને. બીજાં અનેક દેશદ્રોહી કારનામાં એના નામે છે.
‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’માં આમિર ખાન તમામ હદ વટાવી ચૂક્યો છે. મૂળ કથા સાથે ચેડાં કરીને પોતાનો પાકિસ્તાનપ્રેમ દર્શાવીને એણે ફરી એક વાર જે થાળીમાં પોતે ખાય છે તે જ થાળીને ચાળણી બનાવી દીધી છે.
આ ફિલ્મને બૉયકોટ કરવાની ઝુંબેશ જો ફિલ્મ રિલીઝ થતાં પહેલાં ન થઈ હોત તો ફિલ્મનો પહેલો શો જોયા પછી જરૂર થઈ હોત અને એ બૉયકૉટને પ્રચંડ પ્રતિસાદ મળ્યો હોત.
ફિલ્મનાં બીજાં અનેક નબળાં પાસાં છે. ફિલ્મનો પાંચ-દસ-પંદર ટકા જેટલો હિસ્સો ( સિનેમેટોગ્રાફી, સંગીત કે પછી બાળ-કલાકારો ઇત્યાદિ) વખાણવાલાયક હશે પણ ઓવરઓલ લાલ સિંહ તદ્દન બકવાસ છે, બૉક્સઓફિસ પર ડિઝાસ્ટર પુરવાર થશે એવું તમામ અનુભવી ફિલ્મ રિવ્યુઅરોનું કહેવું છે.
મેં આ ફિલ્મનો ફર્સ્ટ ડે ફર્સ્ટ શો – રક્ષાબંધનની સવારના નવ વાગ્યાનો – જોવા માટે જુહુ પીવીઆરમાં ટિકિટ બુક કરાવી હતી પણ બે દિવસ પહેલાં મારી નવી યુ-ટ્યુબ સિરીઝના શૂટિંગનું શેડ્યુલ બદલાયું એટલે ટિકિટો કૅન્સલ કરી. મેં જે રિવ્યુઝ જોયા વાંચ્યા તેમાંથી મને જે માહિતી મળી તેના પરથી આ લેખ લખ્યો છે. ફુરસદ મળ્યે આ ફિલ્મ જોઈશ ત્યારે વિગતે લખીશ.
‘લાલ સિંહ ચડ્ઢા’માં દેખાડવામાં આવેલા પાકિસ્તાનપ્રેમને સેન્સર બોર્ડે કેવી રીતે પાસ કર્યો તેનું આશ્ચર્ય છે. જોકે, સારું થયું સેન્સરે પાસ કરી – આપણને ફરી એકવાર પુરાવો મળી ગયો કે આમિર ખાનની નસોમાં કયું લોહી વહે છે.

Can you write about Kartikeya 2? It would be great to hear your thoughts on this movie.
I have not seen it. I haven’t even seen the first one. Frankly I am not much inclined towards the dubbed films however great they may be. I see south Indian movies in the original language with subtitles. For example Drishyam or other Mohanlal films or Rajnikant films which I go for the first day first show (6 am!).
And I am yet to write about Rocketry which I have watched in theater for 4 times.

I want to ask you one very simple question. You wrote an entire article on a movie that you have not even watched yet. I watched the movie and I read your review. Do you think it’s morally or ethically correct to publicly opine on something and someone without atleast being bothered to check out the facts? Are you not committing the same mistake that the religious fanatics make when they spread hate while they lecture on religion and God without having read the holy books?
Don’t you think that this is the height of prejudice and ignorance when one can strongly opine on something without having checked the facts for themselves?

You should have appreciated my transparent writing where I don’t hide the fact that I had to cancel my tickets and couldn’t go to the first day first show of the film. And you should have waited till I post an exhaustive review of this bullshit film after I watch it during this weekend ( if it remains till then in the theaters!).

I am an advocate by profession and I have represented India in many cultural exchange programmes as well as international peace conferences. I appreciate your frankness that you hadn’t watched the film. But that frankness does not absolve you from the duty of fact checking and responsible writing especially since there is a strong view being projected through it. You and I are not judiciary and labelling anyone anti national through an individual or media trial reeks of prejudice and immaturity. I am sure you are neither of those things and hence I pointed out what I thought appropriate.

સો વાતની એક વાત. Do you approve my take in my article about Pakistani Islamic terrorist and the American nationalist Leutenent Dan Taylor? Do you have the audacity to say that it falls under the license of creative freedom and freedom of expression, my lord!
ચાલો, સો વાતની એક વાત કરીએ.
The movie shows a heart touching transformation, if slightly far fetched, in a former violent terrorist due to Lal Singh Chadda’s non judgement and selfless action of saving the former’s life and his continued good conduct towards a former terrorist. Reformation is possible with love and respect but I am sure you won’t get it.
Yes I have the AUDACITY to say that an extremist is a man who refuses to fact check before forming an opinion, who spews hate and judges others as anti nationals and who refuses the possibility of reformation through good conduct. Admittedly,the story shown in Lal Singh Chadda is different from the one shown in the original movie but there is no angle of any ‘anti- ism’ in it unless you want to bend every fact to make people imagine it.
I reiterate and repeat my original point, you have every right to disagree with a certain movie plot. But you have NO RIGHT whatsoever to publicly opine on something that you have not even watched personally and hence are not in a position to evaluate from all angles. Or may be you have the right but that certainly makes you wrong.
